Martin, TN – Led by freshmen sisters Claudia Yanes Garcia and Lidia Yanes Garcia in singles play, Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team produced solid results at the Skyhawk Invitational, Friday and Saturday.
The twin pairing impressed from Day 1 of competition, with Claudia and Lidia knocking off Southeast Missouri’s top two players, 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively.After a 6-2, 6-3 nod over Alabama-Huntsville’s Marleen Gort on Saturday, Claudia fought back to defeat UT Martin’s Sarah Candeloro, 3-6, 6-2, 10-7. Meanwhile, Lidia make quick work of UAH’s Cristina Cabana, 6-3, 6-3, and Andrea Plantada Cortes, of UT Martin, 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Brittney Covington fell to Mila Maijtan of SEMO, 6-3, 6-1, Friday, before dropping a pair of matches, Saturday, against Aniek Remmerswaal (UAH), 6-1, 6-4, and Burcu Tari (UTM), 6-1, 6-2.
From the No. 4 position, junior Isabela Jovanovic went 2-1 on the weekend, with both victories coming on Saturday. The Brazilian defeated UAH’s Naomi Esteve, 7-5, 6-1, before earning the nod over UTM’s Asel Jumamukhambetova, 3-6, 6-3, 10-3.
In doubles play, the Lady Govs gained one victory in six matches, which was won by Claudia and Covington over Stearman/Gullick (UAH), 8-6.
Austin Peay returns to the court, September 18th-19th, to host the Governors Invitational.
