Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUMurray, KYMorgan Gardner, Austin Peay State University’s junior golfer, shot a final-round 75, Tuesday, to finish at 149 total and a second-place tie in the Murray State Invitational.

Gardner finished tied with Murray State’s Sydney Trimble, one stroke behind medalist Brooke Cusamano (74-74=148).

It was the Orlando, FL, native’s best two-round score during her two-plus years at APSU. In addition, the second-place finish was the best by a Lady Govs golfer since Tala Mumford tied for first at the 2013 UAB Beach Blast.

“I am extremely proud of Gardner and her determination to play well this week,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “She was able to score and that is what we have to have.”

Unfortunately for APSU, Gardner played as an individual. As far as the Lady Govs team? Despite shooting six strokes higher (324) than Monday, they moved up one spot to fifth (642) in the final standings. Host Murray State won the event at 603, followed by Southern Illinois (614), Tennessee Tech (623) and Belmont (630).

Junior Morgan Kauffman had the Lady Govs only other sub-80 round with a 79 to finish at 161. However, it was freshman Ashton Goodley, in her first tourney, with the Lady Govs team overall top score with a 158 (78-80), followed by Kauffman and Taylor Goodley (78-83=161). Junior Amber Bosworth was APSU’s other counter, Tuesday, with an 82 and an overall 163. Senior Jessica Cathey struggled much of the two days, shooting a 165 (81-84). Kelsey Schutt, joining Gardner as an individual, shot a 82, Tuesday, for a two-round 162.

“As far as the team is concerned, we have a lot of work to do,” Robson said. “We have to take our shots to the course. We hit it well on the range and then don’t execute them on the course. We are very talented but we have to go after each shot aggressively and earn each shot.”
