Austin Peay snapped a three-match losing streak in a big way last Friday against Western Illinois, defeating the Leathernecks, 7-1.

It was the first time since 2011 the Lady Govs scored seven goals in a single contest. In addition, freshman McKenzie Dixon delivered a historic performance, recording the second hat trick by a freshman and first since 2013.

Junior Gina Fabbro scored two goals in the victory, which bumped her to third all-time in career goals with 17. Senior Taylor Van Wagner netted her second career goal and first of the season in the 56th minute, while freshman Jennifer Smith scored with under a minute remaining for her second tally of 2015.

Kennesaw State (3-4-1) continues its six-game road trip prior to Atlantic Sun later this month. The Owls are 1-3 on the tour, with its lone win coming on September 6th against The Citadel. KSU has gone scoreless since in two games at Furman and No. 17 South Carolina, but as evidenced by a 12-0 victory in their season opener, the Owls can strike quickly. Brittney Reed leads the team in goals with seven, six of which were scored against Alabama A&M in the opener.

Alabama State (0-6-1) was picked to finish third in the SWAC, but have struggled in its non-conference schedule. The Hornets have been outscored 27-2 over a four-game losing streak, including a 7-0 defeat at Jacksonville State. Alabama State is led by Lewis sisters, Aaliyah and Ariela, who have combined to record 11 of the team’s 20 points.

Last Time Against Opponents

Kennesaw State: Both teams first met last season at the Middle Tennessee Tournament, with Kennesaw State earning a 1-0 victory against the Lady Govs, September 5th. After no shots in the first half, APSU held a 22-5 shot disadvantage.

Alabama State: Sunday will be the first match between Austin Peay and Alabama State.

Keep An Eye On

Austin Peay is pursuing a second-straight victory for the first time this season. In fact, the Lady Govs won back-to-back games just once a season ago.

With Gina Fabbro now healthy after suffering an early season injury, the Lady Gov offense has been in sync. Four starters – Fabbro, Dixon, senior Shelby Olszewski and junior Nicole Wojcik – combined for 16 shots against Western Illinois.

The back four defensively has been renovated, with junior Mary Ruth Locastro moving to center back and Taylor Van Wagner shifting to a defensive midfielder. In addition, Morgan Jackson, who redshirted last season, started at left back in a new role.
