Austin Peay Sports Information
Clarksville, TN – After a strong start to the fall season, Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team will return home to host the APSU Fall Invitational this weekend.
The four-team event will begin at 9:00am, Friday, at both the Governors Tennis Center and outdoor courts.
Along with Lipscomb making the short trip from Nashville Tennessee, two Ohio Valley Conference schools – Belmont and UT Martin – are entered in the field. The Lady Govs opened the season at the Skyhawk Invitational last weekend, with twin sisters Claudia Yanes Garcia and Lidia Yanes Garcia impressing from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. The duo combined to go 6-0 in singles play, with only one match seeing a tiebreaker set.
Sophomore Brittney Covington paired with Claudia to earn the team’s lone doubles victory, but the Clarksville native is seeking an improved tournament in the singles bracket after going 0-3 at Martin.
Junior Isabela Jovanovic posted a solid 2-1 record from the No. 4 spot, and is looking to carry that momentum onto her home court.
The invitational will be the debut event for Belmont, coming off a 6-15 mark in 2014-15. The Bruins have a veteran-laden group of two seniors and five juniors, and are led by sophomore Suzanna Stapler, who finished last year at 12-10 in singles action.
Lipscomb participated in the Miami (Ohio) Invitational last weekend, and despite falling 6-0 to the host Redhawks, outmatched Butler to go 4-2 in singles. Junior Laura Kent led the way from the No. 1 position, building upon her 14-4 record from the spring.
The Skyhawks already are familiar with Austin Peay after inviting the Lady Govs to partake in their invitational. The Lady Govs defeated UT Martin 3-1 in singles, but lost 3-1 in doubles play. In doubles, UT Martin was a perfect 10-0 at last weekend’s invitational.
