Clarksville Parks and Recreation Report for September 20th, 2015

Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

This weeks highlights include: Free Family Salsa Night, Sevier Days, Youth Basketball League Registration, Community clean-up at the Clarksville Greenway and Movies in the Park.

Free Family Salsa Night

The Kleeman Community Center is ready to dance the night away at the Family Salsa Night on Friday, September 25th from 6:00pm to 10:00pm.

The event will feature Latino music and dance, basic Salsa introductory instruction and a variety of food will be served. A game area will be provided for children (ages 6 to 15) in which a variety of game activities will be available, making this event accessible to families without the necessity of childcare. The best part? This event is free of charge!

Fort Defiance to host pre-Civil War event, “Sevier Days”

The Fort Defiance Interpretive Center, located at 120 Duncan Street, is excited to present “Sevier Days,” an 18th century, pre-Civil War event, September 25th and 26th from 10:00am to 5:00pm and September 27th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

This event will focus on the historical frontier and colonial period of Clarksville and will feature reenactors, flintlock musket firing demonstrations, a flint knapper making Indian arrowheads, and an authentic blacksmith operation and frontier camp life. Event is free and open to the public.

Registration is now open for our Youth Basketball League

Is your child interested in playing basketball this winter? Clarksville Parks and Recreation is proud to offer a Youth Basketball League for boys and girls ages 7 to 15. The cost is $65.00 per player. Each player will receive a jersey, water bottle and award.

Registration continues through October 5th or until full. Registration is available online at recpro.cityofclarksville.com. Registration is also available at the Kleeman Community Center, Crow Community Center and Burt-Cobb Community Center, as well as at the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Main Office located at 104 Public Square. The Main Office is open from 8:00am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Registrants must bring their birth certificate for age verification if they are registering for this program for the first time.

Practices will be held at local school gymnasiums beginning November 2nd and games will be held each Saturday, beginning December 5th, at the City’s three community centers. Parents should be contacted by their coach prior to the start of games to let them know where and when their child will practice.

If you’re also interested in a leadership role on the court, Clarksville Parks and Recreation is seeking Youth League coaches. Parks and Recreation will offer coaches’ training on October 13th and 15th at 6:00pm at Freedom Point at Liberty Park. All interested coaches may contact Athletic Coordinator, Albert Casillas, at the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Main Office.

Community clean-up at the Clarksville Greenway!

On Saturday, October 3rd, the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department will be hosting a clean-up at the Clarksville Greenway, located at 1101 Pollard Road, from 8:00am to 10:00am.

Our trails need constant maintenance, but to make it more fun, we schedule volunteer maintenance days throughout the year to help keep them in shape! Anyone interested in participating in the Greenway clean-up can sign up online at recpro.cityofclarksville.com or meet at the Clarksville Greenway on clean-up day. All clean-up equipment will be provided.

Movies in the Park continues with Disney’s Into the Woods

Into the Woods

Don’t miss your chance to see Into the Woods on the big screen Saturday, September 26th as part of the 2015 Movies in the Park.

Admission is free. The movie screening will begin at sunset, 7:00pm at Liberty Park Amphitheater, located at 1188 Cumberland Drive. Food will be available for purchase on-site. Guests are invited to bring picnic baskets, blankets, and lawn chairs. Please leave your pets and alcohol at home.
