APSU Governors Golf heads north to SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational

Austin Peay State University

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUMadison, IL – After hitting a bump in the road in Ohio, Austin Peay State University men’s golf team seeks to get back on course, Monday and Tuesday, when it participates in the 2015 SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational at the Gateway National Golf Links.

The two-day, 54-hole event (36 Monday, 18 Tuesday) will be played on the par-71, 7,091-yard layout.

Designed by golf course architect, Keith Foster, and developed by Tim Crowley and Denny Walters, Gateway National opened in 1998 and is not only considered the top public golf course in the St. Louis area, but the only true links-style course in the metropolitan area.

It is highlighted by rolling links, separated by mounds, rambling through native grasses, featuring bent grass fairways. This will be the Governors’ first appearance in the SIUE event, although not the first time at Gateway National. APSU played at the Madison, IL, course in the 2006 Billiken Invitational.

The Golf Govs are coming off a disappointing 15th-place finish at the Inverness Intercollegiate but are ready to turn the page as they reach the halfway point of their fall schedule.

“We look forward to going to St. Louis this weekend,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “It is the first time our program has played in SIUE’s event.

“Gateway National will also be new to us but it will be a great opportunity to get back into tournament golf after last week. Inverness is a special place and there is a reason they have hosted major championships there. The best thing for our guys right now is to go back out and get some confidence as we head into the final stretch of the fall season.”

The 15-team tournament will see seven representatives from the Ohio Valley Conference. In addition to the Govs and host SIUE, Eastern Illinois, Murray State, UT Martin, Tennessee Tech and Belmont will be competing. In addition, Chicago State, Bradley, Omaha, Oakland, South Dakota and Western Illinois will be participating. Each day the tourney will begin with an 8:00am. shotgun start.

The Governors will take six players to Illinois, with seniors Chris Baker, Austin Kramer and Tyler Phillips holding the top three spots. Junior Erik Hedberg will play at No. 4 while sophomore Justin Arens, making his first appearance this fall after a solid 2015 spring. Fellow sophomore Alex Rios will play as an individual.
