It is the opening week of a 40-day window in which Austin Peay will practice 30 times before the November 13th regular-season and home opener against California.

While the bulk of last season’s team returns – 11 letter winners and four starters are back – the introduction of two freshmen along with a new coaching staff and its own philosophies  certainly provides its own challenges in the months leading up to the regular season.

Yet, Midlick has been able to work with his team for most of September as part of individual workouts. During that time he has had the opportunity to introduce the basic tenets of his offensive and defensive schemes.

Through his first month with the Lady Govs, Midlick has been pleased with their progress and willingness to absorb new concepts.

“They’ve done great with their attention to detail, as far as taking things we’re saying and putting them on the court,” said Midlick. “I couldn’t be more pleased with their effort and attitude. Now we have to start from Day 1 on Monday working on our execution. We’ve put in a decent amount of our transition offense and half-court defense. We’ll try in the first few days to get a little more technical with that and work on the details.”

The first 20 practices will be crucial for Midlick and the Lady Govs as they begin to flesh out the offense and defense in preparation for its Nov. 5 exhibition tilt against Kentucky Wesleyan. After that test, it will be a quick eight day burst to prepare for the regular-season opener.

“We’ve got to be ready to play by November 13th,” Midlick said. “We have an outline, a template if you will, of what we want to get done in these first 20 practices. Then we can be flexible with the last 10 to work on what we’re doing well or not doing well.”

Throughout the preseason, Midlick has clear goals for his team – outlined when they first met in August. The goals define the effort and attitude he expects out of the Lady Govs, not only during the upcoming 2015-16 season but also every time they take the court in practice.

“Every day we want to make sure we’re working toward our three goals we outlined to them at the beginning,” said Midlick. “First, we want to be a better transition team than any team we compete against. Second, we want to compete on the boards every time we take the court. Finally, we want to have good shot selection. No matter what we’re doing we’re going to focus on those three things.”
