Murfreesboro, TN – Facing strong winds, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team got off to a slow start in morning round of the 2015 Blue Raider Invitational, but the Lady Govs battled back, Monday afternoon, before darkness ended the day.
The Lady Govs shot an opening-round 322 and were 10th in the competitive 16-team field, but had moved up three spots before play ended Monday.The second round will be completed 7:30am Tuesday before the final round will tee off at 9:15am at the par-72, 6359-yard Old Fort Golf Club layout.
In the morning, only senior Jessica Cathey was able to complete the round with a score lower than 80, her 78 coming on the heels of her medalist performance in the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.
Freshman Ashton Goodley came in at 80, followed by junior Morgan Kauffman (81), freshman Taylor Goodley (83) and junior Morgan Gardner (86), who was the Lady Govs most affected by the wind. The Lady Govs had just three first-round birdies and nine double bogeys.
In the afternoon, when the winds slowed somewhat, the Lady Govs had four birdies but just one double before the day ended with most Lady Govs scheduled to play/report three holes. Taylor Goodley was just 2-over while Kauffman was 3-over.
“Jessica and Ashton kept fighting to give us a shot of a good first round,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “Taylor and Morgan played well this afternoon.”
