“What an outstanding accomplishment by our student-athletes, coaches and staff members,” said Austin Peay athletics director Ryan Ivey. “Our student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom and have embraced the true meaning of ‘student-athlete.'”

Eleven of the department’s 13 programs measured in the report either maintained their average or showed improvement from the previous report. That included two programs – women’s tennis and women’s golf – which reported 100 percent of their respective student-athletes obtained their degree during the measured period.

In addition, the Governors football, men’s basketball, softball and women’s track and field programs each posted their best graduation success rates since its creation.

“The expectations and time demands that are place on student-athletes today are extraordinary,” said Ivey. “To excel in the classroom at the rate they have achieved is a true testament to their character and their ability to be successful in everything they do.”

The NCAA developed the GSR to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR differs from the federal graduation rate calculation in two important ways. First, the GSR holds colleges accountable for those student-athletes who transfer into their school. Second, the GSR does not penalize colleges whose student-athletes transfer in good academic standing.  Essentially, those student-athletes are moved into another college’s cohort.

The department’s federal graduation rate number was slightly behind its GSR counterpart, with 62 percent of first-time freshman obtaining their degree within six years. The federal graduation rate does not account for transfers in or out of an athletics department. Additionally, the athletics department’s graduation rate was more than double the university’s graduation rate (29 percent).

This marks the 20th year that GSR data have been collected. The NCAA began collecting GSR data with the entering freshman class of 1995.
