The 6-6, 190-pound Thompson has been a utility player for Hardin Valley Academy and head coach Joe Michalski, adding first base and outfield duties to his repertoire.

However, the Governors recruited Thompson as a pitcher with a low-90s fastball and a growing list of pitches.

As a junior, Thompson was 1-4 with 31 strikeouts and 28.2 innings pitched last season. At the plate he posted a .309 batting average with 24 RBI. He helped lead Hardin Valley to the 2015 TSSAA Class AAA state title going 5-for-12 with two RBI and two walks in four state tournament contests.

His potential attracted the attention of USA Baseball which made him one of 40 selections to its 17U National Team Development Program. He participated in the program from August 16-21 in Los Angeles and made two appearances on the mound.

“Tyler is a very athletic right-handed pitcher from Knoxville where last season his high school team won a state championship,” said Governors head coach Travis Janssen. “We believe he is a guy that will throw hard in the future and will have a chance to compete early in his career. His pitches have good life and he’s very competitive on the mound. We love the fact that he’s a multi-sport athlete, it shows he likes to compete. We’re very happy that he will be a Governor in the future.”

Thompson also played baseball during the summer with Diamond Simcox Academy and was coached by Larry Simcox and Brian Hochevar. He also participated as a pitcher in the 2014 Power Showcase held at Marlins Field, the home of Major League Baseball’s Miami Marlins.
