Clarksville, TN – After playing as difficult a two-game season-opening stretch ever in Governors history, Austin Peay State University men’s basketball will return home 7:00pm, Wednesday, to play IP-Fort Wayne in its home opener at Dave Aaron Arena.
After losing to No. 18/20 Vanderbilt in its season-opener last Friday, the Governors are coming off a 102-76 loss to No. 14/15 Indiana, Monday night, in a game that saw the Govs cut Indiana’s lead to seven, 51-44, early in the second half. But the Hoosiers connected on 15 straight shots, including seven three pointers, to pull away from the Governors.
“That was something to build on,” said Dave Loos. “Friday night we left Vanderbilt (80-41 loss) with our feelings hurt. We didn’t win tonight, but we accomplished a few things that we can build on and hopefully carry into Wednesday night.”
Loos especially was pleased with the offensive patience the Govs displayed—something that was sorely lacking against Vanderbilt. In fact, that patience led to Chris Horton getting better looks inside as he went 8-of-13 from the floor. The Govs also connected on half (7 of 14) from three-point range—APSU made just one three pointer against Vandy. And the patience resulted in the Govs being credited with 15 assists—they had just one against Vanderbilt.
Horton finished with 17 points in the game while Khalil Davis added 16 and John Murry 14 off the bench.
The Governors will be facing a Mastodons team that is coming off an 85-53 drubbing of Manchester, Monday. Â They lost the season opener to Valparaiso, considered one of the nation’s best mid-majors this season, by a closer-than-it-looks 78-64 count, Friday night.
Max Landis led IPFW with 14 points in each game and has connected on 7-of-11 three pointers so far this season. The Governors, who have been torched by the three ball in the early going (Indiana was 16 of 27 from three-point range), will need to check the redshirt senior guard, who began his career at Gardner-Webb. Fellow guard Mo Evans is averaging 12.5 points per game.
