Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – The Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department received a Four Star Award from the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association (TRPA) at this year’s state convention held in Kingsport, Tennessee.

This additional one mile of trail connects Heritage Park to the 101st pedestrian overpass and provides users the ability to travel nearly 11 miles in one direction.

By the spring of 2016, users will see additional amenities such as benches, trashcans, dog pet waste stations, water fountains, safety barrier railing, landscaping and more that will enhance their experience along the Clarksville Greenway.

“This award is such an honor and testament to our City’s vision to create safe, enjoyable and healthy walking, running and cycling options.” said Mark Tummons, Clarksville Parks and Recreation Director. “It is a result of the determination and efforts of so many, especially the City’s Street Department, who have done a yeoman’s job in completing the trail paving early this year.”

Founded in 1952, the TRPA is a professional society of more than 1,200 individual and agency members interested in the recreation and parks movement in Tennessee. The TRPA is involved in lobbying, education and scholarships related to the field of parks and recreation.

About the Clarksville Greenway

The Clarksville Greenway opened in 2010 as part of the rails to trails initiative, envisioned to clear out old railroad tracks, converting them into trails. The trail runs south past the Mary’s Oak Trailhead and then the Pollard Road Trailhead, near the midpoint, where there are restrooms and pet watering stations. From there, it leads nearly all the way to the Clarksville sewer plant, about 1,000 feet north of the Red River.

Another section of the Clarksville Greenway runs through part of downtown to McGregor Park where the Cumberland River and Red River meet. Plans to extend it along the Red River to the Waffle House are underway.
