Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team hopes to pick up where it left off before Christmas when it plays host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 7:00pm, Monday, in Dave Aaron Arena.

Before the Govs broke for the holidays, they won back-to-back games against Lipscomb, 92-84, last Sunday, and Wofford, 84-77, Tuesday.

The victories brought the Governors record to 6-7 as they head into the final week of non-conference play.

But to achieve the .500 mark for the first time this season the Govs will have to do it against a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi team that owns an impressive 8-3 record—the Islanders’ only losses have come against high majors Texas A&M, Texas and Wisconsin. In fact, when the Govs lost 61-48, December 2nd, in Corpus Christi, they were the fourth victim in a six-game winning streak.

APSU Chris HortonThe Islanders are a veteran crew, with eight seniors on the squad (second only to Tulsa for number of seniors).  In fact, four of the five starters are seniors, but it is the one junior Rashawn Thomas who is leading the way at 17.1 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.  He had 10 points and 12 rebounds in the southern Texas matchup.

However, it was a pair of seniors, guard Brandon Pye and forward Bryce Douvier who accounted for much of the damage in the first meeting. Pye scored a team-high 16 points, 11 in the second half, nailing a trio of three pointers along the way. The 6-7, 235-pound Douvier powered his way for 15 points. Point guard Hameed Ali, who is ninth nationally in steals (2.7 spg) had three in that contest—all in the second half.

APSU Josh RobinsonBut it was the Islanders’ physical defensive play that helped limit the Govs to just 35 percent shooting. The Governors led 32-31 second-half lead and then watched Texas A&M-Corpus Christi go on a 11-0 run that all but salted the game away as not only did the Govs struggle from the floor but at the free-throw line as well. APSU made only 8-of-24 free throws.

Chris Horton was APSU’s only double-figure scorer that night with 18 points and 14 rebounds as APSU’s starting backcourt/perimeter players of Josh Robinson, Khalil Davis and Terrell Thompson made just 8-of-24 shots (33 percent). That same trio went 13-of-26 against Lipscomb and 15-of-21 against Wofford as Robinson scored a career-high 30 points in the past week.

Horton, meanwhile, followed up his 37 points (16-of-17 field goals), 13-rebound game with Lipscomb with a 20-point, 13-rebound effort against Wofford. He is averaging 18.8 points and 13.5 rebounds per game.

He is ranked first nationally in both double-doubles (11) and offensive rebounds (5.69) and second in rebounds per game.  Robinson, meanwhile, is averaging 15.0 points per game while Davis comes in at 12.9 to offer balance from the perimeter and mid-range areas.

The Islanders will come not having played for eight days, their last game an 80-74 home victory against Cal Poly, a team that beat the Govs early in the season at Northern Colorado.
