Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan’s message on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – “Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.”
? Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, as a community, we pause to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Many of the quotes I rely on for inspiration are from Dr. King. He had a special insight and ability to cut to the heart of the matter. The words he spoke more than four decades ago ring true today.

I am honored to serve as the Mayor of Clarksville because our community lives through service. The other day, I had the pleasure of delivering a presentation at the Mayors’ Power Breakfast for the Chamber of Commerce. The room was full of successful men and women from almost every industry imaginable. I recognized many of them not just from their work but from the time they spend working with community groups and civic organizations serving our community.

I also had the opportunity to officially open a fitness center at the CTS administrative offices on Friday. The reason the center is needed is that so many CTS employees, especially the drivers, can’t take breaks during the day. They don’t have the chance to move or even have a lunch break. They are so busy doing their jobs and serving their customers that they don’t have time to take care of their own health.

Our community is great because everyone – teachers, police officers, bankers, doctors, mechanics, soldiers – do what they can to be of service to our community.

I completely agree with Dr. King that every person can find greatness through service to others. I believe our City takes it one step further. Clarksville is great through the service of its citizens.

If it is possible to be both proud and humbled, I am. I am proud of our City and what we are accomplishing together and humbled by the confidence you place in me every day as your Mayor. I assure you I do not take this responsibility lightly and I am very excited about our future.

I invite you to join me today in remembering the life of Dr. King and I thank you for all you do to make Clarksville the very best City to live, work and raise our families.
