Instant Peay Play: Start of Semester signifies Spring Sports right around the corner for APSU Govs

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Spring semester officially begins on January 19th, with the first day of classes for Austin Peay State University, and that means spring sports are right around the corner.

Within the next four or five weeks, joining the men’s and women’s basketball teams – who are only about a third of the way through their respective Ohio Valley Conference schedules – and the women’s indoor track and field team, who are two meets into their 2016 schedule, will be joined by softball, baseball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and outdoor track.

Softball will be the first to see action in the spring, just 25 days into the semester, when they travel to Gardner-Webb University to play in the first of four in-season tournaments under first-year head coach Shane Showalter.

The Lady Govs first home softball game will be on March 12th at Cheryl Holt Field when they host Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

A week later, the Governors baseball team will hit the field on February 19th, as they host Bradley University at Raymond C. Hand Park for the first game of a three-game series under first-year head coach Travis Janssen.

The Govs play their first seven games of the season at home.

Three days after baseball kicks off the season, the men’s golf and tennis teams open their respective seasons on February 22nd.

The men’s tennis team, who made the finals of the OVC tournament in the spring of 2015, opens at home versus Xavier to begin a three-match home stand.

While the tennis team is hosting Xavier, the men’s golf team will be in Hilton Head, SC at the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate – the first of five spring tournament for the Govs.

On February 24th, the Lady Govs tennis team will open their schedule with a home match versus Kennesaw State – the first of a four-match home stand to open 2016.

March will see the final two spring teams begin their respective schedules, with the women’s golf team squaring off against Belmont on March 11th in a dual event at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, AL, while the Lady Govs outdoor track and field team hosts its own Spring Fling meet at Governors Stadium on March 19th.

So if you’re a fan of Austin Peay sports, before the end of February eight different teams will be in action, as the athletic department heads into the second half of the school year.
