Morehead, KY – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team will hit the road for five straight Ohio Valley Conference games, beginning with Morehead State, 6:45pm, Wednesday, in refurbished Ellis T. Johnson Arena.
The Governors are coming off a heartbreaking 87-86 overtime home defeat by Eastern Illinois, the Panthers scoring on a coast-to-coast layup with 0.3 seconds remaining in the extra session.
As a result, the Govs look for their first OVC road victory with a 9-13 record, but more importantly a 2-5 OVC mark.Despite a struggling shooting night, sophomore guard Josh Robinson helped get the Govs to overtime by scoring seven points in the final 1:38, including a pair of driving layups in the final 27 seconds to tie the game at 27 all.
Senior center Chris Horton recorded his 17th double-double this season by scoring 22 points and snatching 15 rebounds, despite missing nearly six first-half minutes with foul woes.
Fellow senior Khalil Davis snapped out of a scoring drought of sorts, tallying his first double-figuring scoring game in six outings. In addition, freshman forward Jared Savage matched his career high with 11 points and his six rebounds were his second most this season.
Savage and fellow freshman Zach Glotta garnered 69 minutes of court time between them Saturday. Glotta scored eight points and dished out two assists while collecting a pair of steals from the point-guard slot.
But APSU’s shooting woes continued, making just 27 of 63 (43 percent) from the floor that also included a 7-of-25 effort from three-point range.
That is not a positive trend for a team heading north to face a team known for its defense under coach Sean Woods. Â Morehead State currently is first in the OVC in scoring defense (66.8 ppg), rebound margin (+5.1) and steals (8.2 spg).
The Eagles were picked to finish second in the OVC East in the league preseason poll. They come in 10-9 overall and 4-3 in the OVC. In fact, after an impressive home win against Tennessee Tech last Thursday, Morehead State fell to Jacksonville State, 78-74, in a snow-delayed contest. Â Morehead played that gamer without leading scorer Corban Collins (12.6 ppg), the former LSU transfer who is battling a groin injury.
However, junior Xavier Moon, who was OVC Newcomer of the Week, picked up the slack by scoring 22 points against the Gamecocks after tallying 24 against Tennessee Tech.
Forward Anthony Elechi’s game also has been evolving. After scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds against Tennessee Tech, he followed with 15 points and eight rebounds against JSU.
