Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification ProgramMontgomery County, TN – Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT), a post secondary technical training school, is the latest organization to become Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certified.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, Mayor Durrett asked what TCAT did to earn the green certification.

Debbie Griffin, Clarksville Campus Coordinator and leader of the green certification initiative, explained. “Our new Clarksville location, opened in 2013, was built with energy efficiency in mind. We have occupancy sensors throughout the building, energy efficient lighting, natural lighting, and automatic temperature controls that adjust for optimum savings.”

“We have implemented online testing as much as possible to reduce the amount of paper we use, and we began recycling through Bi-County before opening – making sure that all of our cardboard was put in recycling containers during the move. We continue to recycle cardboard, and we also recycle paper. In addition, we provide premium parking spaces for alternative energy vehicles and for those who carpool,” said Griffin.

Director of TCAT, Arrita Summers, stated that to help TN Promise students meet the Community Service requirements, TCAT began a program to recycle white paper as a volunteer initiative. TCAT students pair up to collect white paper throughout the school and the amount of paper recycled is reported at the end of the year.

“We are also working on increasing environmental sustainability through some of our programs, such as the updated heating, ventilation, air conditioning/refrigeration track that provides training on energy efficiency and optimization,” said Summers.

Mayor Durrett asked, “Is there an area you wish you could improve and do you feel the employees are doing some of these conservation efforts at home.”

Griffin responded, “We need to improve the recycling of plastic bottles with our students but we’re working on it. Many of us, including me, who had children on the Sango recycling team continue to recycle at home, and we will continue our conservation practices as we remodel our older facilities.”
