APSU Governors Golf selected seventh in OVC preseason poll

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUBrentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team has been picked to finish seventh in the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference championship in a vote of league coaches.

The Governors finished fifth in last spring’s OVC championships, although they were second heading into the tourney’s final day.

Belmont is picked to win the championship, which again will be played at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, April 25th-27th.

The Bruins received nine of the 11 first-place votes to finish with a league-high 98 points.

The next four teams in the standings were separated by just seven points with defending champion Eastern Kentucky being picked second (81) followed by Jacksonville State (76), Tennessee Tech (75) and UT Martin (74). Murray State (54), Austin Peay (46), Morehead State (37), SIU Edwardsville (35), Tennessee State (17) and Eastern Illinois (12) rounded out the voting.

APSU returns four players who played in last season’s championship—senior Austin Kramer and Chris Baker, junior Erik Hedberg and sophomore Justin Arens. Baker and Kramer along with fellow senior Tyler Phillips are expected to be the team leaders. Baker tied for fifth in the 2015 OVC championship, shooting a three-round 1-under 215. Arens was APSU’s next best finisher, tying for 11th at 218.

The Golf Govs will open 2016 play, February 22nd-23rd, when they travel east to Hilton Head, SC, to participate in Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate.
