Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team lost its first match of 2016, Friday, coming out on the wrong end of a 4-3 battle against Dayton at the Governors Tennis Center.
The Govs (1-1) fell behind the eight ball early in the day, allowing the Flyers (4-1) to earn the vital doubles point.
Freshman Claudia Yanes Garcia and sophomore Brittney Covington teamed to gain a 6-4 win over Kristina Benjamin and Mattea Kilstofte, but Dayton topped the Govs from the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.Mandy Marchant and Marlys Bridgham defeated freshmen duo Lidia Yanes Garcia and Helena Kuppig, 6-3, while Alex Townsend and Jackie Kawamoto defeated junior pairing Hannah Tatlock and Isabela Jovanovic, 7-5.
Austin Peay’s success came from the top three positions in the singles lineup, all of which being freshmen.
APSU’s No. 1 player Lidia Yanes Garcia knocked off Bridgham, 6-2, 6-4, while her twin sister Claudia made quick work of Townsend, 6-3, 6-1. Kuppig followed suit, improving her individual record to 2-0 after a three-set victory over Kilstofte, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
However, the Govs rally would come up short, with Dayton sweeping the remaining singles matches. Jackie Kawamoto defeated Tatlock, 7-6(4), 6-2, Jade Kawamoto won over Covington, 7-6(3), 6-4, while Marchat narrowly escaped with a win over Jovanovic, 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.
Austin Peay continues into weekend homestand at Noon, Saturday, against Chattanooga.
