APSU annual Guitarfest begins today

APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative ArtsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University and the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts will present the annual APSU GuitarFest, featuring guest artist concerts, lectures and workshops beginning today.

The concerts take place on Monday February 15th, Tuesday February 16th, and Wednesday February 17th at 7.30pm in the Music/Mass Communication Building’s Mabry Concert Hall and are free and open to the public.

This year’s festival is dedicated to the guitar duo.

The first concert features the Lee-Turrentine Guitar Duo; the second features the Rucco-James Duo in a performance of 19th century guitar music performed on historical instruments; and the final concert features APSU graduate students Kieran Franzone and Alex Rockwell in a performance of music for two guitars and for guitar and piano.

Christopher Lee, of the Lee-Turrentine Guitar Duo, is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, APSU and the University of North Texas. He is currently editor of the Austin Classical Guitar K-12 guitar curriculum and a teacher in the Knoxville area.

Zebulon Turrentine is a graduate of the Shenandoah Conservatory and, in addition to his activities as a performer, is well-known for his hand-crafted classical guitars. Their program will include music by LHoyer, Telemann, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Prokoviev, Debussy and Domeniconi.

The Rucco-James Duo specializes in early 19th century guitar music performed on authentic instruments. They have now been performing together for more than 20 years and have appeared throughout the United States and Europe.

Douglas James directs the guitar program at Appalachian State University, and Pasquale Rucco is the founding director of the ACIF music academy consortium in Naples, Italy. Their program will include music by LHoyer, Diabelli, Giuliani and Rossini.

APSU graduate students Franzone and Rockwell are both graduates of Fredonia State University in New York. Their program will include music for two guitars byTisserand, Middleton, Wallace and Rossini, along with music for guitar and piano by Rodrigo and Diabelli (assisted by APSU staff accompanist Hyeeun Hahm).
