Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team fell in nonconference play against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 7-0, Saturday at the Governors Tennis Center.
The Govs (1-4) experimented new doubles groupings against the Hilltoppers (5-3), placing all six players with a teammate they have never competed alongside this spring.From the No. 1 position, WKU’s Andreanna Christopoulou and Cynthia Melita Setyawan defeated Lidia Yanes Garcia and Brittney Covington, 7-5. WKU went on to grab to doubles point, with Tereza Hejlova and Elpida Malamou topping Helena Kuppig and Hannah Tatlock, 6-0, while Violetta Shatalova and Gabby Crofford beat Claudia Yanes Garcia and Isabela Jovanovic, 7-5.
In singles action, Austin Peay forced two three-set matches, but was unable to pull out a victory. For the first time in 2016, Claudia Yanes Garcia was defeated in singles play, dropping her record to 4-1 as Hejlova won 1-6, 6-0, 6-4. Kuppig also forced three sets before coming up short versus Malamou, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
From the No. 1 spot, Christopoulou cruised over Lidia Yanes Garcia, 6-1, 6-1, Melita Setyawan defeated Tatlock at No. 4, 6-0, 6-2, and Shatalova rolled against Covington, 6-1, 6-0. Lastly, at No. 6, Beatriz Gutierrez defeated Jovanovic, 6-1, 6-3.
The Govs return to action next Saturday, March 12th in Clarksville against Wright State.
