National Consumer Protection Week

Whether it’s an email telling you that you have won the lottery or notification that a long lost relative has left you a large sum of money.

These are just a few of the many ways criminals prey on consumers.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn’t true. Common scams include phone calls telling you that a child or grandchild has been arrested and you need to send money for their bail. Always be on alert, most scams are committed for the sole purpose of collecting your personal information.

ICU advises consumers to think before you act and never give any personal information over the phone or email.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security’s (www.TN.Gov/safety) mission is to serve, secure, and protect the people of Tennessee.
