With senior Austin Kramer leading the way with a 1-under 70, the Governors enjoyed another strong day. Kramer is at 144 as is fellow senior Chris Baker, who shot a 2-over 70, Saturday, also sits at 144 for two days.

The Governors sit 586, 10 strokes behind leader Xavier (576) on the par-71, 6,937-yard Pinehurst No. 8. Elon, which ended Friday in second place, one shot ahead of the Govs, slipped to third place with a 295, one shot behind the Governors.

Kramer rode the birdie train late. After sitting at 2-over entering the 13th hole, Kramer tallied birdies on the next three holes to get it at 1-under. He recorded pars on the final three holes for the 1-under total.

Baker shot an even-par 71, with birdie and one bogey to go with 16 pars during a solid Friday round. He is tied for third overall.

But that senior duo wasn’t the only Govs to close well. Junior Erik Hedberg had birdies on Nos. 12 and 15 and only a bogey on No. 18 hedged his late-round momentum. Still he finished at 3-over 74. Sophomore Justin Arens couldn’t find a birdie all day and finished at 5-over 75 while senior Tyler Phillips had a 9-over 80.

“I am proud of the guys and how they came back after a good round yesterday,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “We had a good stretch of holes from 12-15 that kept us in the tournament.

“Austin stepped up big with three straight birdies en route to his 70. We had a couple mental mistakes today that will have to eliminate tomorrow in order to win.”

Freshman Sean Butscher, who had a 75 on Friday as an individual, slipped to an 81 Sunday.

The three other Ohio Valley Conference participants are in fifth (Belmont, 595), seventh (Morehead State, 599) and Eastern Kentucky, 608).

The tourney concludes Sunday.
