Pinehurst, NC – Although it didn’t receive the ending it was seeking, APSU men’s golf team gained a Top 5 finish, Sunday, in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The Austin Peay State University Governors shot a final-round 298 to finish at 884 and took fourth place in the three-day event at Pinehurst No. 8.
The Governors entered the final round in second place, 10 shots out of first.Xavier (878) held onto to win the event by one stroke over Elon while Marshall shot the day’s low round (288) to take third (880) on the 6,937-yard, par-71 Pinehurst No. 8.
Sunday it was senior Tyler Phillips leading the way for the Govs. After a couple of struggling rounds to open play, Phillips settled down to fire a 1-over 72 in a round that saw him record one birdie and two bogeys.
In fact, few birdies were to be had for the Govs. Seniors Chris Baker (76) and Austin Kramer (77) failed to gain birdies on the final day. Sophomore Justin Arens had four birdies in firing a 2-over 73, but his up-and-down round also saw him tally six bogeys. Junior Erik Hedberg had a pair of birdies but those were offset by a pair of double bogeys en route to a 77.
Freshman Sean Butscher, playing as an individual, had a 78.
The Govs outdistanced the three other Ohio Valley Conference schools in the tourney. Belmont (892) took sixth while Morehead State (896) was eighth and Eastern Kentucky (911) was ninth in the 11-team tournament.
