APSU - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – During the Spring Break holiday, three groups of APSU students spent a week volunteering on Alternative Break Trips through the Austin Peay State University Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement.  Collectively, these students completed nearly 500 hours of community service.

From March 6th-11th, nine students and a staff member visited Washington, D.C., and spent part of their week volunteering with the DC Central Kitchen (DCCK), a community kitchen that recycles food from around the nation’s capital and distributes it to the hungry. APSU students spent the week helping prepare food and participating in a nutrition lab run by DCCK.

From March 6th-11th, eight students and a staff member traveled to Chapin, South Carolina, to work with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. The area surrounding Lake Murray experienced what has been called a “once-in-a-thousand-years flood” in October 2015, and APSU students went to help with relief and rebuild efforts. The group assisted St. Bernard’s Project—a rebuild and recovery nonprofit that was founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina—in finishing a build project, including painting a home to make it move-in ready.

From March 9th-11th, six students and a staff member made a series of day trips into Nashville to volunteer with the Nashville Rescue Mission. On Wednesday and Thursday, they worked the lunch and dinner shifts in the men’s kitchen, preparing and serving meals alongside the touring cast of “The Phantom of the Opera,” which was running at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.  Friday was spent across town assisting the women’s campus with food prep and day-to-day operating tasks.

The Alternative Break program is organized by the Center for Service-Learning & Community Engagement at APSU. Through a written application, students are selected to participate in a variety of service projects throughout the country that are organized by student leaders and faculty and staff advisors. A total of 10 trips are scheduled throughout the 2015-2016 academic year, during the fall, winter, spring and summer.
