APSU Lady Govs Softball to make Death Valley run this weekend

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – APSU’s softball team will hit the road for its second straight Ohio Valley Conference weekend road trip, Friday and Saturday, as its travels to Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky for a pair of OVC doubleheaders.

The Austin Peay State University Governors (5-15, 1-2 OVC) will open play, 11:00am (CT), Friday, at Morehead State (14-10, 3-0 OVC), while concluding the trip, Saturday, with a noon (CT) twinbill at Eastern Kentucky (18-6, 3-0 OVC).

Both of this weekend’s opponents are among the most played in Austin Peay history, with the Govs having played Morehead State 81 times and Eastern Kentucky 70 times – the fourth and fifth most played series in program history.

APSU's Kacy AcreeOffensively, after the first 20 games this season a trio of freshmen lead the Govs, with all three batting .315 or better. Redshirt freshman Kacy Acree leads the way with a .391 batting average, including seven doubles, a triple and a team best three home runs.

She also leads the team with 19 runs scored. She is coming off a 5-for-9 OVC-opening weekend at Southern Illinois Edwardsville, where she had a double and a home run to  drive in both runs in the 2-0 series-opening win.

True freshmen Danielle Liermann and Kendall Vedder follow Acree, with Liermann batting .371 with six doubles, a triple and two home runs. She leads the team with 16 RBIs and has scored 11 runs. Vedder rounds out the trio with a .315 batting average, with four doubles and nine RBIs and eight runs scored.

APSU's Autumn HannersIn the circle, junior Autumn Hanners leads the team with a 3-7 record, including the Govs first shutout since April 8th, 2014, when she authored a three-hit, 2-0 victory over SIUE last Sunday. She also has a team-high 28 strikeouts in 49 innings of work. Junior Allie Blackwood has the other two APSU wins, with both coming in relief.

Senior Natalie Ayala (0-2) also enters this weekend coming off her best performance of the season, going 4.2 innings versus SIUE and giving up only three hits and two unearned runs over that span.

Both Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky are coming off OVC-opening road sweeps last weekend. The Colonels took three at Tennessee State while the Eagles claimed all three contests at Belmont. Entering the week, Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State combined to own the OVC’s top five hitters, average-wise.
