In its first spring under head coach Will Healy and a coaching staff comprised mainly of new faces, the Austin Peay State University Govs have been forced to learn much and learn it quickly.

The returners have adapted well to the new staff’s philosophy and style, with more of the playbook being implemented with each practice session.

As has been the case so often over the past few seasons, the spotlight is shining brightest on the quarterback position, where a trio of old hands is striving to prove themselves to the new staff. Darrien Boone, Mickey Macius and Timarious Mitchell have gotten a heavy workload during the spring, under the watchful eye of new offensive coordinator Wesley Satterfield.

“There’s really good competition there,” Healy said. “I think all three bring their own dynamic—they all have their own leadership styles, they all bring a different athletic ability or trait to the table. They’ve worked hard and it’s important to all of them.

“I think we can win with all of them. We’ve just got eliminate mistakes and find out which one can manage the offense the best to give us the best chance to win.”

The Governor backfield has become crowded with quality at the tailback position. In addition to the return of 2015 OVC All-Newcomer honoree Kendall Morris, Austin Peay’s offense has featured a healthy dose of Julian Franklin, who enters his senior season with 144 career carries. Marvin Franklin looks to follow Morris’ path from a year ago and use his redshirt season as a springboard to plenty of snaps during his first fall on the active roster.

“Having a group of talent is always going to be the best thing going for an offense,” Morris said. “We’re opening up a new perspective, going from one offense to another. You take certain aspects you’ve learned and bring them into the next scheme.”

The defense, under the guidance of Brandon Cooper and Marcus West, has been beset by injuries during the early days of camp, but bright spots have emerged. Byron Carver, Zach Stuart and others have made strides up front during spring ball, while Roderick Owens remains captain of the secondary.

The Governors are tentatively scheduled for a brief scrimmage during each Saturday session during the spring. The Govs close out the spring session April 23rd with the annual Red-and-White Spring Game. All scrimmages and practices during the spring are open to the public.
