After shooting 7-over 291 in the morning, the Austin Peay State University Governors, after being as much as 9-under for the round, still ended with a 1-under 283 in afternoon for a 574 total.

Host Arkansas State led after the first two rounds, shooting a 555 (278-277). The tourney concludes Tuesday morning on the par-71, 6,521-yard layout

“I thought we took another step toward being a really good team,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “For most of round one, we played good golf but couldn’t finish it off.

APSU Austin Kramer“Round two we came out hot going 9-under in our first seven holes. We hit a few bad shots down the stretch but overall we played solid.”

In morning round only senior Austin Kramer was able to break par, shooting a 1-under 70, tallying four birdies mixed with a trio of bogeys. The Governors had 14 birdies during the morning round, but had 21 bogeys and five doubles to push the opening round number higher than they would have preferred.”

Fellow senior Chris Baker was 2-over 73 as was sophomore Justin Arens. Junior Erik Hedberg, playing his first round as No. 1 in the lineup, was the other counter with a 75. Senior Tyler Phillips struggled to an 81.

But Phillips bounced back in the afternoon, shooting a 1-under 70—he had three birdies and an eagle 3 on the par 5 No. 4. Hedberg also stepped up with a 1-under 70, where he offset four bogeys with five birdies.

Baker shot even par during the afternoon while Arens was 1-over. Kramer slipped to a 76 in the second 18.

Despite being fourth overall as a team in the 15-team event only Baker is in the Top 20 (tied for 20th) at 2-over 144.

“Only having one player in the Top 20 is good and bad,” Wilson said. “I think it show how consistent everyone was but it also show we need some to step up Tuesday.”
