APSU Lady Govs Tennis hosts Tennessee State, Belmont

APSU Lady Govs - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team will face Tennessee State, 10:00am, Friday, and Belmont, 10:00am, Saturday in a weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play.

The Govs (4-9, 3-4 OVC) are coming off of a victory against Murray State, 4-3. Team leaders Lidia Yanes Garcia and Claudia Yanes Garcia have the best singles records 10-3 and 10-2, respectively.

Claudia Yanes Garcia also holds the only winning doubles record of the season (4-3) with teammate Brittney Covington.

So far this season, the Tigers (8-7, 1-5 OVC). In conference play, Tennessee State faced Morehead State in Nashville. The Tigers have a four-match losing streak in conference play, most recently a 4-0 loss to Eastern Illinois. Blair Moses holds Tennessee State’s lone current winning streak in singles and the duo of Phyllicia Hemphill and Abhilasha Vishwanath hold the team’s current doubles winning streak for this season.

The Bruins (2-10, 0-6 OVC) have gotten off to a slow start, losing 10 matches in a row to teams including Eastern Kentucky and Tennessee State. Thus far, Lindsey Whitehead and Maddie Gilley hold the most victories, both having 6. In doubles, Maddie Gilley has the most wins paired with Suzanna Stapler.

Both matches are scheduled to be played on the Foy Fitness Center outdoor courts. However, if weather conditions aren’t favorable play will be moved into the Governor’s Tennis Center.
