Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team pulled off its first sweep of the 2016 season, cruising over Tennessee State 7-0, Friday, at the Governors Tennis Center.
The Lady Govs (5-9, 4-4 OVC) entered the weekend seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, so each victory from this point forward is key.
Meanwhile, the Tigers (5-8, 1-6 OVC) are currently ninth in the ranks.Austin Peay opened the contest with back-to-back wins in doubles play, led by Lidia Yanes Garcia and Helena Kuppig topping Abhilasha Vishwanath and Pragti Natraj, 6-2.
No. 2s Claudia Yanes Garcia and Brittney Covington pitched a shutout against Taylor Patterson and Phoenix Gandy, 6-0, to clinch the point, while the No. 3 match between Isabela Jovanovic/Hannah Tatlock and Phyllicia Hemphill/Ani Poplashuili was unfinished.
In singles, the twin sisters opened with one-sided victories – Lidia defeated Poplashuili, 6-2, 6-1, and Claudia beat Natraj, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3, Helena Kuppig was victorious over Gandy, 6-3, 6-1, while Hannah Tatlock got the better of Vishwanath, 7-5, 6-1.
Sophomore Brittney Covington returned to winning ways at the No. 5 slot, earning a 6-3, 6-1 nod over Patterson. Finally, Jovanovic won in dominant fashion over Hemphill, 6-1, 6-1.
Austin Peay concludes its home slate 10:00am, Saturday against Belmont.
