APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityMurfreesboro, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the top of the seven inning, Tuesday at Blue Raider Softball Field, but couldn’t get the final hit it needed in a 3-2 loss to Middle Tennessee.

Trailing by a run, Rikki Arkansas and Chandler Groves reached base for the Governors (6-26) with a single and a hit by pitch — with one out – bring up their two leading hitters, Kacy Acree and Danielle Liermann, with a change to at least tie the game.

But Acree grounded out to second – with both runners moving up a base – followed by Liermann hitting a come-backer to the pitcher for the final out in the 3-2 loss.

Natalie Ayala (0-6) took the complete-game loss, while Pattie Taylor (4-4) got the win in relief.

Middle Tennessee (21-19) had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run single by Austyn Whaley.

Austin Peay would cut the deficit in half in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Christiana Gable, and then tie the game, 2-2, in the fifth on a single by Acree.

But the Blue Raiders responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, coming on a RBI double by Morgan Harris, which proved to be the game winner.

Overall, Austin Peay outhit Middle Tennessee 10-4 – with Acree, Liermann and Arkansas all recording two hits each — but two double plays, a caught stealing and an unlucky bounce of a wild throw that led to an Austin Peay runner being tagged out cut short several of the Govs scoring opportunities.

The Governors return to Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend when they travel to Charleston, IL, to play Eastern Illinois in a three-game series.
