Clarksville, TN – On Thursday, April 14th, the Rivers and Spires Festival’s award winning Quilts of the Cumberland event will kick off at Madison Street United Methodist Church at 5:00pm. Quilts of all shapes and sizes will be on display.
The exhibit will take place all three days of the festival, April 14th-16th. The show will display local artisans with a variety of quilts from traditional to one of a kind art quilts.
Quilting is a centuries old art form where the quilters use colors, shapes and their creativity to express themselves through the use of fabrics, various textiles and embellishments. Quilting is still a tradition in many households. The 2014 Quilting in America survey found that there are 16 million active quilters in the country. Quilters in the United States spend a whopping $3.76 billion a year on their fiber art passion, a 5% increase in the value of the market over the last four years.
“We want to share the love of quilting,” stated Wanda Morrison. “Most quilters like to share what they do and tell about their techniques. I think it’s a fun way to express art in the form of fabric and thread.”
The Quilts of the Cumberland is also hosting a Trunk Show on Thursday, April 16th at the Madison Street United Methodist Church at 5:30pm. Starr Howell will be presenting a lecture and quilt trunk show entitled “Our Quilts tell Stories”. Starr’s specialties include trying new techniques, combining machine piecing and machine appliqué, experimenting with new tools, and using many fabrics and small pieces in unusual combinations.
New this year is a Viewers Choice Award. People that come and see the show will get the opportunity to vote for their favorite quilt.
This year’s categories are:
- Traditional Bed Quilt (max width 90?)

“This event is sure to entertain and open people up to a whole new art form,” Morrison said. “I would love for everyone to come out and support the Quilts of the Cumberland.”
