Tennessee Titans announce 2016 NFL Schedule

Tennessee TitansNashville, TN – The Tennessee Titans open the 2016 regular season at home against the Minnesota Vikings on September 1th1 and host the Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos on December 11th. The Titans also will appear in a Thursday night primetime contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Nissan Stadium on October 27th.

“Opening up with Minnesota, a playoff team, will be good test for us at home,” said Titans head coach Mike Mularkey. “We haven’t opened up at home since 2012, it will be nice for our fans – opening day for our fans, there is nothing like it.”

“Then we have a stretch of 12 games until the bye, but we do have the opportunity to play a Thursday night game which acts like a mini-bye in the middle of the season. I think it is a pretty fair schedule. I like where the bye is at the end of the year as opposed to the beginning of the year like we had last season,” stated Mularkey.

“The first thing I always look at when the schedule comes out isn’t where is the bye or the opener but what does December look like as we try to get on a roll at the right time of the season and it is good that we have two of the last four games at home. Nothing in this schedule stands out as unique, which is a good thing. All of our opponents will be tough and we will be tough for our opponents,” said Mularkey.

The Titans schedule features home games against Denver, Cleveland, Green Bay, Minnesota, Oakland, Jacksonville, Houston and Indianapolis.

Tennessee will travel to Kansas City, San Diego, Miami, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Jacksonville and Indianapolis.

Flexible scheduling may be applied in Weeks 5-15. During that period, flexible scheduling can be used by the NFL by shifting a Sunday afternoon game into primetime and moving the Sunday night game to an afternoon start time.

Also, a select number of games are being “cross-flexed,” moving between CBS and FOX to bring potentially under-distributed games to wider audiences.

For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to January 3rd. The NFL schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot. Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.

Additionally, the Titans released their preseason dates and times. Tennessee opens the preseason slate of games at Nissan Stadium against San Diego on Saturday, August 13th at 7:00pm (central). Week two against NFC Champion Carolina will be played on Saturday, August 20th at 2:00pm (central) and the finale at Miami will be announced at a later date.

The Titans 2016 schedule contains several interesting stories:

  • The Titans open the season at home for the first time 2012.
  • The Titans will host the Broncos for the first time since 2011, which will be only their fourth trip to Nashville. It also marks the fifth time Nissan Stadium has hosted the defending Super Bowl Champion from the previous season – Indianapolis ‘07, Tampa Bay ‘03, New England ’02 and Baltimore ’01.
  • This marks the third consecutive season the Titans and Browns will match up.
  • Green Bay and Minnesota make only their third trips (regular season) to Nissan Stadium and first since 2008.
  • The Titans and Dolphins match up for the seventh time over the last 13 years and six of those matchups have happened in South Florida.
  • The Titans trip to Chicago will be only the second trip to the Windy City since 1995 for the Titans/Oilers franchise – 2008.
  • This marks the third consecutive year with a Thursday Night game against Jacksonville.
  • The Titans play their Week 16 game on Saturday, December 24th, marking their first Christmas Eve game since 2011.
  • The Week 13 bye marks the latest bye in franchise history.
