Instant Peay Play: APSU Governors graduating seniors accomplished much during their time

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s athletic department had 37 student-athletes receive their degrees in the May 7th spring commencement, with many leaving their marks in their respective sports and in the overall history of Governors athletics.

Two basketball players, Chris Horton and Tiasha Gray have been the face of the men’s and women’s basketball program the past four years.

Horton is one of only nine players in NCAA history to record 1,700 points, 1,200 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career, putting him in the same category as the likes of David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Shaquille O’Neal and Ralph Sampson among others.

He was also First-Team All-OVC and OVC Tournament MVP as a senior.

Gray was a two-time First-Team All-OVC selection, as well as OVC Defensive Player of the Year following her junior year, while finishing her career as the school’s all-time leader in steals, second all-time in scoring and assists and fourth in three-point field goals made.

Men’s golf has a long and storied history in the OVC, with numerous all-conference and OVC Golfer of the Year, yet Chris Baker shattered the school record for lowest round by a APSU golfer with a round of 61 as a junior during the Grub Mart Intercollegiate at Silver Lakes Golf Course in Glencoe, AL.

Speaking of golfers, Jessica Cathey will leave as one of the most decorated female golfers in school history earning First-team All-OVC three times.

On the track, Breigh Jones has represented the school not only on the conference level, but national and international as well, as she earned OVC Track Athlete of the Year honors as well as making the NCAA Track and Field Championships and running in the Junior Pan-American Games.

Jones was also a OVC Scholar-Athlete Award winner, the highest individual honor that the conference gives annually to just three men and women athletes per year.

These are just a few of many stories and awards earned by this year’s graduating seniors, there are OVC Medal of Honor winners, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholars, OVC champions and even a ROTC cadet.

The list of accolades goes on and on, but as these 37 student-athletes move into the next phase of their lives they leave having left a big mark on Austin Peay athletics and the university as well.
