Savannah Amato selected APSU Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Freshman pole vaulter Savannah Amato, of the Austin Peay State University track and field team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Amato took gold at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships, hitting a career-best 4.04m (13’ 3”) for her first career OVC gold medal. The 10 points she contributed to Austin Peay’s team score proved crucial to the Governors third-place finish—the third consecutive top-three showing by Austin Peay at the OVC Outdoor Championships.

A Delaware, Ohio, native, Amato’s season is not done yet. She will represent Austin Peay at the 2016 NCAA East Preliminary Round, May 27th, in Jacksonville.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included

  • Junior outfielder Chase Hamilton, of the baseball team, hit .400 (8-for-20) with three home runs and eight RBI to pace the Govs to a series sweep against SIU Edwardsville. The Arlington, Tenn., native homered in each game of the contest against the Cougars.
  • Seniors Breigh Jones and Kymmalett Ross, junior Terri Morris, and sophomore Allysha Scott, of the track and field team, won the 4x400m dash with a season-best 3:40.27 at the 2016 OVC Outdoor Championships, securing Austin Peay’s first gold medal in the event since 2000. Ross (11 points as an individual) added bronze in the 100m dash and just missed the podium in the 200m, while Morris (six) also found the podium in the 400m. Jones (five points) and Scott (three) also contributed in the 400m as individuals.
