13 inning affair ends with APSU Baseball besting Belmont Bruins, 7-4

APSU Sports Information

APSU Baseball - Austin Peay State UniversityJacksonville, TNRidge Smith and Clayton Smithson slashed run-producing 13th-inning doubles while senior closer Jared Carkuff threw 6.2 innings of relief as Austin Peay State University survived against Belmont, 7-4, Saturday afternoon, in a marathon Ohio Valley Conference baseball tourney elimination game at the Ballpark at Jackson.

The Govs now will face the loser of the Southeast Missouri-Jacksonville State winners’ bracket game later tonight (approximately 9:00pm).

Smith’s opposite field RBI rocket down the right field line came after Wes Purcell’s infield single and Josh Wilson‘s opposite field single were sandwiched around a Chase Hamilton fly out.

After Wilson was thrown out at the plate on Brett Newberg‘s infield grounder, Alex Robles was walked intentionally, despite first base being occupied.

APSU Baseball's Clayton SmithsonHowever, Smithson crossed up the strategy by ripping a 1-0 pitch to left center, scoring Smith and Newberg.

It was a large measure of redemption for Smithson, who was charged with two errors in the ninth inning, the first coming with the infield drawn in on a hard-hit Tyler Fullerton grounder. With the tying run on third base, Smithson saw the ball bounce off his glove and upper body before rolling behind him, giving him no chance at retiring pinch runner Tyler Walsh at the plate. That sent the game to extra innings.

In the 11th inning, Carkuff pitched out of a bases-loaded two-out jam when Josh Wilson a headlong bell-flop dive and catch on a soft liner off the bat of Rafael Bournigal. The game-saving catch seemingly turned the game’s momentum.

APSU Baseball's Jared CarkuffThe Bruins only had one baserunner over the final two extra frames. In fact, Carkuff fanned the side in the 13th after the Govs gained the lead.

For Carkuff, it was season’s longest relief out—we worked 4.2 innings against Murray State back in late March. His 11 strikeouts were not only his most in a relief performance but overall as well—he had 11 strikeouts against Eastern Illinois, March 9th, 2015.

The senior from Bell Buckle, TN permitted just four hits in his 6.2 innings of work, throwing 72 strikes of his season-high 114 pitches. It was the sixth relief win for the second-team All-OVC selection.

APSU Baseball's Garrett CopelandHis outstanding work overshadowed that of Caleb Powell, who relieved a struggling Michael Costanzo in the third inning with the Govs tied 3-3. The Milan, TN native escaped a two-on nobody-out jam to keep the game tied. The Govs had tied the game in the top of the inning, using two errors and RBI hits by Garrett Copeland (the second run scored on an outfield misplay) and Logan Gray.

Powell, who started Wednesday’s first game against Belmont but departed after the long rain delay, fired 4.1 shutout innings, permitting just two hits along the way. In total the Governors bullpen threw 11 innings, allowing just one run and six hits.

Belmont, meanwhile, used six pitchers, with relievers Austin Krzeminksi and closer Dom Veltri tossing nine between them, with Veltri incurring the pitching defeat.
