Instant Peay Play: Former APSU Baseball Gov part of historic mark for minor league team

Instant Peay Play - APSU SportsClarksville, TN – Ryne Harper, who was a member of the Austin Peay State University baseball team from 2008-11 and current member of the Jackson (TN) Generals, was a part of a history-making first half for the franchise.

The 6-foot-3, right-handed, Clarksville native is a middle reliever and has been an important cog for the Generals, the Double A minor league farm team for the Seattle Mariners, who set a club record with 46 wins in their season’s first half.

The 46 total wins in the Southern League’s first half of their split season is one victory better than the old franchise record set back in the 1999 and 2000 season’s when they were the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx.

The 46-24 overall record was 10 games better than the Southern League’s North Division runner-up Chattanooga Lookouts and five games better than the Southern Division first half champion, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, who authored a 41-29 win-loss mark before the league’s all-star break.

Harper has appeared in 21 games for the Generals – the third-most appearances by a pitcher on the squad – with a 2-2 overall record, with two saves and a co-team leading five holds.

In 34.1 innings of work this season, Harper has 49 strikeouts (which averages out to 12.8 per nine innings pitched) and 13 walks to go with only 30 hits.

This is the first season for Harper in the Mariners farm system, after the Atlanta Braves traded him back on December 11, 2015 and being assigned to the Generals on April 2, after spending his first five pro seasons in the Braves farm system after being drafted in the 37th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft after his senior season with the Govs.

Overall, Harper has a 22-14 win-loss mark in 193 total games in his six pro seasons, which also includes 22 saves.

Harper finished his Austin Peay career tied for ninth in total wins (17) and saves (9) – with eight of the saves coming in his senior season, when he led the team.

He also finished his APSU career sixth in total appearances (73), 11th in strikeouts (177) – including leading the team in 2009 with 54 – and 21st in innings pitched (191.2).

The Generals regular season runs through September 5th and Jackson, by virtue of winning the division’s first half, are assured a spot in the Southern League post-season playoff.
