APSU Volleyball joins growing list of Governors teams starting camp

APSU Women's Volleyball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – On campus and ready to hit the court, Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) volleyball team begins organized team practices at 10:00am, Wednesday in the Dunn Center.

The Governors reported back to campus Sunday and will spend Monday and Tuesday in meetings preparing for the season. A 16-day preseason window opens Wednesday and Austin Peay will have just 12 days prior to the start of classes, August 22nd. A slim window packed with 25 practices, including four three-a-days, due to the limited opportunities before the season begins.

“Our first task is to get back into volleyball shape,” said head volleyball coach Taylor Mott. “Then we’ll work hard to determine everyone’s roles on the team this season. We’ll find out who our key players are from the start and then who we believe can make progress and be there at the end of the season.”

Austin Peay returns just eight student-athletes from last season’s squad and will see five newcomers – three freshmen and two four-year transfers – join the squad. The Governors will return four hitters that posted 100-plus kills last season, including junior Ashley Slay who led the team with 2.45 kills per set (238 kills). In addition, senior Sammie Ebright returns after piecing together an impressive all-around performance last season.

There will be plenty of opportunity for this members of the 2016 team to move into the starting rotation with three regular starters leaving the team after last season. That trio included APSU’s leading hitter and one of its two setters. In addition, the Govs will be seeking a replacement at libero.

“I believe we have a good mix of veterans and newcomers,” said Mott. “They are excited for our preseason to start and get in the gym and play volleyball. I believe they will work hard and I’m optimistic we will make the most of our limited preseason opportunities.”

The 16-day preseason camp will end when Austin Peay opens its 2016 regular-season slate at the DoubleTree Hotel Buccaneer Challenge, August 26th-27th. The Govs will face host East Tennessee, Troy and USC Upstate in the two-day tourney. Austin Peay then returns to Clarksville for its earliest home opener since 2008 when it hosts Western Kentucky, August 30th.
