APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team fell on the wrong end of a 3-1 decision at Lipscomb, Sunday.

Early in the match, Lipscomb showcased their offensive prowess in the attacking third, using quick passes to set up the first goal of the evening.

In the 3rd minute, Olivia Doak scored the opening goal, with assists credited to Natalie Duboise and Maycie McKay.

Soon after, in the 7th minute, Doak scored another, assisted by McKay, to give the home side a 2-0 advantage.

In the 23rd minute, the Bisons continued to maintain possession and pressed forward, opening a look at goal where Duboise hit the open net from just outside the box.

APSU Soccer - Kirstin RobertsonBut the Govs never went away, turning the tables on the next start at midfield. Lipscomb was called for a handball in the box during the 24th minute, and junior Kirstin Robertson stepped up to tap the penalty kick past the keeper’s right side.

It’s Robertson’s fourth goal of 2016 – which currently leads the Ohio Valley Conference – and the first penalty kick chance for APSU this season.

Austin Peay made a goalkeeper change in the 27th minute, replacing freshman starter Mary Parker Powell with junior Lindsey Todd. Todd entered and made three saves, and did not allow a goal.

APSU Soccer - Gina FabbroIn the second half, APSU, led by senior Gina Fabbro, continued to press the Lipscomb outside backs. Fabbro was able to get a couple good looks at goal, while sophomores Jennifer Smith and Amber Bateman each put a shot on net. Fabbro recorded a team-high four shots, while Robertson attempted three.

“We were exposed in some areas, which shows us things we need to work on and improve,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “Lipscomb is a great team with two SEC wins this season. For us, it’s about learning and getting better now five games in. I don’t think we performed to the level we are capable of, and we’ll address those things this week.”

Austin Peay returns home 6:00pm, Friday to host South Alabama at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. The weekend will be a homecoming for former Govs players as the team celebrates its 15 year anniversary, while Sunday’s match against Alabama A&M will be Senior Day.
