Clarksville Parks and Recreation Report for September 4th, 2016

Clarksville Parks and Recreation DepartmentClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

This weeks highlights include: Sleep Under The Stars Campout, Canoe + Kayak Float, Riverfest Activities, and the Heritage Park Skate Park Art Contest.

Heritage Park Skate Park Art Contest

Art on the Park contest

The Clarksville Parks Recreation Department is once again seeking entries for its Art on the Park contest. This contest takes place every two years in an effort to beautify the Heritage Park Skate Park and to deter graffiti.

We’re looking for your creative submission – a drawing, painting, and new this year – music samples!

Not only will winning artists be able to paint their artwork on the skate park walls, but winning musicians will be able to perform live at the Art on the Park event on Saturday, October 15th at the Heritage Park Skate Park, located at 1241 Peacher’s Mill Road.

Prizes will be awarded to multiple winners in two age groups, ages 12-19 and 19-25.

Entries can be submitted in-person at the Clarksville Parks Recreation Department, located at 102 Public Square, or online at www.cityofclarksville.com/artonthepark

Deadline to enter is September 18th. There is no fee to enter!

Artists: Winners will receive a $25.00 cash prize, custom t-shirt featuring their design, and the opportunity to paint their artwork on a pre-selected skate park wall. A mentor will be provided by Art Link to assist with the painting. All supplies will be provided.

Musicians: Any musicians, bands or solo artists are eligible to participate. A competition will be held at Wicked Good Sandwiches on September 24th for all musicians. Winners will receive a free E.P. recording and the opportunity to perform live on October 15th.

Guests to the Art on the Park event on October 15th will be able to talk to artists about their work on display, listen to live performances by the musicians, and enjoy skate demos and clinics. The event is free and open to the public. Food and drink will be available to purchase. All are welcome to attend.

Art on the Park is sponsored by Porter Paints, Sacer & Savive, Art Link, No Egrets Tattoos, Clarksville Living Magazine, and Wicked Good Sandwiches.

Riverfest Activities

There are so many ways to play at the City of Clarksville’s 29th annual Riverfest Celebration. The Festival will be held Thursday, September 8th through Saturday, September 10th, 2016.

52-Hour Film Festival

Participants will create a short film (4-7 minutes) based on the genre assigned at the mandatory meeting Friday, August 19th at 6:00pm at Freedom Point. Films will be judged, selected and screened at a public showing on Thursday, September 8th as part of the Riverfest Art Experience.

Juried Art Show

Professional, Amateur, Student, and Senior Divisions are available. Entry fees vary depending on division – register early and save! Art Show will be held at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center on Thursday, September 8th as part of the Riverfest Art Experience.

Human Foosball Tournament

Takes place Saturday, September 10th, 10:00am – 8:00pm.

Grab five of your favorite friends and compete for your chance to win ultimate bragging rights! Six-man teams will compete in this life-size version of your favorite table top game in one of three divisions: Youth (10-17 years old), Adults (18-30 years old), and Semi-Pro (31 years old and above).

Cost is $60.00 for the entire team. Register your team today!

Cardboard Boat Regatta

Takes place Saturday, September 10th, beginning at 10:00am.

This fan favorite is back for the tenth year. Boats are constructed from recycled materials and raced down the Cumberland River in a 100-yard dash. Divisions include: adult, youth (with adult), civic/churches, businesses, and local government agencies. Registration ends Friday, September 2nd.

Sleep Under The Stars Campout

Join Clarksville Parks and Recreation for a bonfire, games, ghost stories and more at our great family campout at Billy Dunlop Park! Sleep Under The Stars Campout will be held September 24th at 2:00pm until September 25th at 9:00am.

The cost is $10.00 per person or $40.00 for a family (up to 6 people)

Event includes an afternoon and evening of games and fun as well as a hot dog dinner and breakfast provided Sunday morning. Families must provide their own tent and sleeping materials. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Billy Dunlop Park is located at 1930 East Boyscout Road, Clarksville, TN.

Canoe + Kayak Float

Canoe + Float - September 17th

Clarksville Parks and Recreation is excited to host a float event for canoe and kayak enthusiasts! Join us for our next float on Saturday, September 17th at 7:30am. The float will be held at Robert Clark Park.

Participants will need to have their own canoe/kayak & life jacket and the float is FREE of charge. Life jackets must be worn at all times.
