Oklahoma City Dodgers beat Nashville Sounds 5-2 to even series
The homers backed a strong performance by Dodgers’ starter Logan Bawcom who limited the Sounds to one run on three hits in six innings. Nashville’s lone run against Bawcom came right away in the first inning. Franklin Barreto sparked a rally with a one-out double to the gap in right-center. Colin Walsh walked to put runners at first and second, and Matt Olson delivered Barreto with a sharp single to left field to give the Sounds a 1-0 lead. The lead for Dillon Overton and the Sounds didn’t last long as Oklahoma City came back with the tying run in the home half of the opening inning. A sacrifice fly from Dickson scored Micah Johnson to even the game at 1-1. Overton and Bawcom turned in a scoreless second inning, but the Dodgers took the lead for good in the third. Johnson got it going with a one-out single and quickly swiped second base. Dickson’s big night continued when he clocked a two-run homer just over the glove of a leaping Colin Walsh at the left field wall. The lead continued to grow in the fifth when Murphy started the inning with a solo blast to left-center to make it a 4-1 game. Johnson followed with a triple and scored when Chris Taylor lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give the Dodgers a 5-1 lead. It was plenty of offense for Bawcom who retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced. It didn’t get any easier for the Sounds when Bawcom departed after six. Sam LeCure struck out the side in the seventh and Joe Broussard wiggled out of a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth by retiring Renato Nunez on a groundout to short. Nashville’s bullpen did their job by keeping the Dodgers off the board after Overton’s exit. The trio of Andres Avila, Carlos Navas and Angel Castro kept it a 5-1 game. The Dodgers turned to closer Jacob Rhame in the ninth. Matt Olson started the frame with a single to right field but Rhame came back to get Matt Chapman on a pop up for the first out. After Bryan Anderson flied out, Josh Rodriguez singled and BJ Boyd legged out an infield single that scored Olson to make it 5-2. Rhame finished the job by getting Jaycob Brugman to fly out to left field. Bawcom picked up the win and Overton was tagged with the loss. Game three of the best-of-five series is set for Friday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Daniel Gossett (1-0, 1.98) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Chase De Jong (1-0, 1.69) for the Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
