APSU Women's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityLedbetter, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s golf saved its best for last at the Drake Creek Invitational, posting a final-round 303 that doubled as its best of the tournament.

Although the 303 was APSU’s best round, the Govs and Southern Illinois were leapfrogged by Murray State’s final-round 294 on their home course, which dropped the Salukis to fifth and the Governors to sixth overall.

With a 306-306-303 (915), Austin Peay consistently bettered its 2015-16 average (313.32) and posted better scores in each round than it did in all but four rounds a year ago.

“Sixth place doesn’t really depict how well we played,” said head coach Sara Robson. “I thought we did a number of things very well. We need to work on our short putts a little bit, but Amy (McCollum) and I were talking after the round about how much better we’ve gotten, how much better our wedge play is. I think it’s just a glimpse of what we can do this semester; I’m very pleased with how well we played.

APSU Women's Golf - Taylor Goodley“It’s frustrating (falling to sixth), but it’s part of it at the same time. You can’t control what other teams do; you can’t play defense in golf.”

The Govs were led by sophomore Taylor Goodley, who remained steady with a one-over 73, giving her a 223 for three rounds (76-74-73) and her fourth career top-10 finish.

Her sister Ashton Goodley was right behind her, posting a three-round 228 (77-75-76) to place 14th.

Sarah Beth Struble was again solid, posting a final-round 77 to finish with a 232 (77-78-77), the first time in her career she’s posted three straight rounds in the 70s.

APSU Women's Golf - Ashton GoodleySenior Morgan Kauffman (78-79-77) and junior AnnaMichelle Moore (76-79-81) were right behind her, carding a 234 and 236, respectively.

“Taylor played really well,” Robson said. “She’ll tell you herself she was a few swings away from shooting a 69. Sarah fought through injury; she was determined to play and really came through for us. Even though Kauffman’s score wasn’t a lot different (from yesterday), I thought she played much better today.”

Kelsey Schutt was APSU’s top individual player, scoring a 233 (82-74-77). Amber Bosworth (78-77-83) and Meghann Stamps (86-81-80) also competed for the Govs as individuals.

“Kelsey played really well today,” Robson said. “Stamps improved each round, I’m happy with her first tournament.”

Western Kentucky took home team honors with a three-round 886 (22-over). The Hilltoppers Mary Joiner (71-75-71=217) was the individual medalist, followed by Southern Illinois’ Brooke Cusamano and Western Kentucky’s Georgina Blackman at 218.

Yorktown, IN, is the site of APSU’s next tournament, the Cardinal Classic, hosted by Ball State at the Players Club, September 19th-20th.
