APSU Govs travel to TCU, host Chattanooga to wrap-up nonconference slate

APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team enters its final weekend of nonconference play, traveling for its inaugural meeting against TCU, 7:00pm, Friday, before hosting Chattanooga, 1:00pm, Sunday.

The Governors returned to their winning ways, Sunday, with a 2-0 victory over Alabama A&M to end a three-game losing streak.

On Senior Day, four-year player Mary Ruth Locastro scored the team’s opening goal in the 12th minute, then sophomore Jennifer Smith doubled the lead in the 64th minute off assists from freshman Melody Fisher and senior Gina Fabbro.

Freshman Mary Parker Powell and junior Lindsey Todd combined in net to record a shutout in APSU’s win over the Bulldogs. Powell started the match and earned the victory, her second of the season.

APSU Soccer - Kirstin RobertsonAustin Peay currently ranks third in the Ohio Valley Conference in goals (12) and shots (92). Junior Kirstin Robertson has accounted for four goals which is tied for second in the league, and has registered 14 shots – second-most on the team behind Fabbro’s 15 attempts.

Friday’s matchup will be the first against TCU in program history. In addition, it’s just the second time in 15 years the Govs will compete in Texas, with the previous match coming in 2005 at Texas Southern. The Horned Frogs are undefeated to begin their season, sitting at 6-0-1 with a 20-3 goal differential. TCU has tied its best start all-time and is one of 16 undefeated teams in the nation.

Chattanooga carries a 2-4-1 mark into the weekend, with its two wins coming against Alabama A&M, 8-0, and Radford, 3-1. The Mocs are led by Ellie Myrick and Peyton McCollum, who each have three goals to begin the year.

Last season, the Govs defeated Chattanooga, 1-0, in double overtime at Finley Stadium. Jennifer Smith scored the game-winner in the 101st minute with a header into the bottom right corner.

Keep An Eye On

Last Friday, the Governors faced South Alabama, a team coming off an upset over No. 1 Florida State days before. Despite giving up a late goal, APSU showed grit and toughness for 80+ minutes and will bring that same mentality into this weekend.

Along with recording her first career assist, the freshman defender attempted two shots last weekend, and also played the full 90 minutes in each contest.

Opportunities.
Against Alabama A&M, Austin Peay tallied 20 shots, its highest single-game total since September 20th last season. The Govs will look to carry that offensive determination over to this weekend.
