Clarksville Chamber Power Breakfast featured Former Corporate Executive Makes Case for “Soft Skills” Improvement

Clarksville Area Chamber of CommerceClarksville, TN – Greg Coker, author, speaker and former senior-level corporate executive discussed “soft skills,” what he defines as the blend of credibility, liability and authenticity that compliment technical skills. These include communication, problem solving, customer service, teamwork and conflict resolution.

“Technical skills are the most important, but most organizations today are over managed and under led,” Coker shared, citing various examples to demonstrate the difference between management and leadership.

He talked about the importance of engaging the people around you, whether in the workplace, home, or church. His research shows that only about 26% people are fully engaged – working with purpose, understanding the vision, enjoying getting up in the morning.

“When people are engaged, they are productive members of a team, they collaborate and respect, they show up to work on time, and they make organizations more successful,” he said.

Diane Todd, executive assistant with Bridgestone Metalpha USA Inc., found the presentation beneficial. “This is information we know, but sometimes we withdraw into our own little boxes and forget to pay attention to the people around us. It reminded me to be more aware of people at work and how important it is to engage with each other. We need to make sure to lift one another up and do our part to make sure everyone feels engaged.”

Coker offered his latest book, “Soft Skills Field Manual: The Unwritten Rules for Succeeding in the Workplace.”  Through his books and workshops, he aims to increase employee effectiveness while boosting productivity, retention and customer satisfaction.

Coker has over 25 years of experience as a senior level executive with three different fortune 500 companies where he led the training & development for over 80,000 employees. His clients include public education, healthcare, business and industry, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations and high performance individuals who benefit from his executive/life coaching.

Power Breakfasts are one of several networking and educational events offered periodically by the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce.
