APSU Volleyball cant get on track at Murray State

APSU Women's Volleyball - Austin Peay State UniversityMurray, KY – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team could not get its offense on track and dropped a three-set decision (19-25, 16-25, 14-25) to Murray State in Ohio Valley Conference action, Tuesday night at Racer Arena in the first contest of the newly minted Battle of the Border presented by Heritage Bank.

Austin Peay (11-7, 2-1 OVC) could not get its offense on track in its first conference road match.

The Govs 22 kills were its fewest since the season opener at East Tennessee. Junior Kaitlyn Teeter was held to eight kills, ending her seven match streak with double-digit kills.

Murray State (8-7, 3-0 OVC) used big runs to gain control in each of the sets. It used a seven-point run to build a 20-11 advantage en route to a 25-19 win. The Racers scored the second set’s first seven points and never looked back in a wire-to-wire victory. The third set turned on Murray State’s 10-3 run that built a 16-6 lead that helped clinch the match.

Audrey Lewis led Murray State with 13 kills and a .308 attack percentage. Scottie Ingram chipped in 11 kills at a .385 attack percentage. The Racers finished with 47 kills, posting double-digit kills in each set, and a .321 attack percentage.

Junior Kaitlyn Teeter led the Govs with an eight-kill performance, but saw her streak of double-digit kill performances end at seven matches. Still she was responsible for more than a quarter of the Govs offense at Murray State.

Slay Blocks Pace Defense
Junior Ashley Slay notched four blocks along with four kills. Two of her blocks came early in the match, helping boost a Govs four-point burst that tied the first set, 5-5. Slay had a hand in four of Austin Peay’s five blocks on the night.

Gerig Graces Back Row
Freshman Ginny Gerig continued her recent hot streak in the back row, leading the way with 12 of the Gov 40 digs. She also had all four of Austin Peay’s service aces in the contest.

Austin Peay, which saw its six-match win streak end, will continue its four-match road trip with a 1:00pm (CT), Saturday contest at Eastern Kentucky.
