APSU Soccer fights Southeast Missouri to 1-1 Draw Sunday

APSU Soccer - Austin Peay State UniversityCape Girardeau, MO – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team battled to earn a point on the road at Southeast Missouri, Sunday, drawing 1-1 at Houck Stadium.

The Governors (7-4-1, 2-0-1 OVC) maintain their unbeaten three-match start to conference play for the first time since 2013.

It’s also the first overtime match of the season for APSU, which was made possible by sophomore Jennifer Smith leveling the match early in the second half.

In the 51st minute, junior Kirstin Robertson played a ball to the feet of Smith who sprinted down the center of the pitch, and the sophomore hit a low shot into the bottom corner for her third goal of 2016. Robertson’s assist gives her 23 points on the season, extending her lead in the OVC rankings.

APSU Soccer - Jennifer SmithPrior to that, in the 30th minute, Southeast Missouri (7-3-3, 1-1-2 OVC) struck first with a goal from its leading scorer Natasha Minor, a shot from the edge of the box following a delivery from Esmeralda Gonzales.

The first half featured the Govs winning the possession battle in the midfield, but SEMO was able to turn its time on the ball into looks at goal, outshooting APSU 4-2.

However, the Govs eventually finished with 12 shots compared to SEMO’s six. Senior Gina Fabbro totaled three shots to lead the team, while Robertson, Smith and senior Mary Ruth Locastro each had two looks at goal.

APSU Soccer - Lindsey ToddJunior Lindsey Todd played the full 110 minutes in goal, with the result making her record 5-0-1 on the year.

“What a great game,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “It was a tremendous matchup. I thought our girls fought hard to play two through overtime periods. I’m really proud of our team for getting a point on the road. We haven’t lost a conference game on the road this season, which is a great testament to this team. Moving forward, we want to continue getting better and we’ll be glad to return home on Thursday.”

Austin Peay hosts Eastern Kentucky at 7:00pm, in the Thursday matchup at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
