APSU Women's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityCape Girardeau, MO – Despite the occasional rough patch, Austin Peay State University women’s golf posted a solid start at the MVC Preview at Dalhousie Country Club, Monday.

After two rounds, the Govs find themselves in seventh with a 36-hole 606 (302-304) that doubles as the fifth-best two-round score in program history. The first-round 302 equaled Austin Peay’s season-best.

Sophomore Taylor Goodley is well-positioned for Tuesday’s final round after shooting a three-over 147 (71-76) Monday. The first-round 71—Goodley’s career-low as a Governor—included six birdies that included three in the last five holes.

“She birdied the last hole and called me over and gave me a fist bump,” said head coach Sara Robson. “She struggled a little in the second round, but she was able to keep it together and played really well.”

APSU Women's Golf - Taylor GoodleyJunior AnnaMichelle Moore and senior Morgan Kauffman each provided a steadying veteran presence in the middle of the lineup.

The duo carded identical scores of 154 (Moore with a 78-76, Kauffman a 77-77), tied for 34th after 36 holes.

In her first appearance in the lineup, freshman Meghann Stamps recovered from a rough first 10 holes, shooting two-under over the final eight holes of the first round and carrying that over with second-round 75, the best of her brief APSU career.

APSU Womens Golf - Meghann Stamps“Meghann struggled with the first 18 holes, but played a great second round,” Robson said. “She really had it going for awhile and kind of got ahead of herself, which cost her some shots. It’s happens to freshmen sometimes and she’ll adjust for next time.”

Sophomore Ashton Goodley rounded out the lineup with a 160 (76-84), while senior Kelsey Schutt competed as the individual with a 158 (80-78).

Overall, the Govs find themselves in seventh, but sit less than 10 shots from a top-four finish. Murray State is atop the team leaderboard with a 581, followed by UMKC (587), Arkansas State (593), Wichita State (597) and Southern Illinois (599).

“I’m super-pleased with how well we played today,” Robson said. “The girls fought hard, it was a true team effort. It’s a difficult course that I thought we played well today.

“Tomorrow, we have to do a better job of finishing. We were in good position with three holes to go and our swings got away from us a bit.”

The final 18 holes play out Tuesday, with an 8:00am shotgun start at Dalhousie.
