Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team settled for a 0-0 draw in its home Ohio Valley Conference contest against Tennessee Tech, Sunday, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
In addition, the five-straight undefeated OVC contests to open a season matches the longest run in program history, with the 2013 squad also doing so.
The Governors (8-4-2, 3-0-2 OVC) attempted 11 shots in the match, and the defense got stronger as the minutes ticked on, holding the Golden Eagles (6-5-3, 2-1-2 OVC) to just two shots from the second period on.
Senior Mary Ruth Locastro led the back line to clear away incoming balls, while junior goalkeeper Lindsey Todd made four saves. It’s Todd’s third shutout of 2016, helping improve her overall record to 6-0-2.
Junior forward Kirstin Robertson led the Govs with four shots, three of which were on goal, while sophomore Jennifer Smith had two shots. Austin Peay’s brightest chance offensively came in the 94th minute with Smith connecting on a header that was directly at the opposing keeper.
“The game was a very good matchup,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “They came at us, we came at them. In the second half and overtime, I thought our girls stepped up and showed their fight to get to the ball first. We had a couple good chances and it’s unfortunate we couldn’t put one away, but Tech has excellent goalkeeping it’s hard to break them down.”
Austin Peay embarks on its final road trip of the season beginning 7:00pm, Friday, traveling to SIU Edwardsville.
