APSU Volleyball take care of Jacksonville State in straight sets

APSU Women's Volleyball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Using its best offensive outing of 2016, Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team won a three-set (25-14, 25-15, 25-23) Ohio Valley Conference contest against Jacksonville State, Friday night, at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (15-7, 6-1 OVC) won its second straight matchup against a first-place OVC squad thanks to a season-best .377 attack percentage while its 56 kills were its most in a three-set match this season.

Three Governors hitters finished in double-digit kill territory, reigning National Player of the Week Ashley Slay finishing with a team-best 14 kills.

The expected battle between two teams entering the night tied atop the OVC standings did not unfold that way in the first two sets. Austin Peay won the first set wire-to-wire and only trailed for a single point in the second.

APSU Volleyball - Cecily GableThe Governors offense opened with 19 kills and a .485 attack percentage in the opening frame. Austin Peay followed that with 18 kills and a .400 attack percentage in the second.

Jacksonville State (15-10, 5-2 OVC) finished with just 18 kills total in the opening two sets, posting a .170 attack percentage. The Gamecocks used the mid-match break to their advantage, grabbing the lead early in the third set. Jacksonville State edged out to a 19-14 lead, its largest of the match.

But Austin Peay roared back with a 7-2 run capped by sophomore Cecily Gable‘s back-to-back kills to get Austin Peay tied 21-21.

APSU Volleyball - Kaylee TaffGable would tie the set again with a kill for 23-23 before Slay took over. Her back-to-back kills, including the match winner on an overpass, sealed the three set win.

Slay’s 14-kill performance came with a .333 attack percentage attached and she added three blocks. Gable finished with 13 kills and a career-best .632 attack percentage. Sophomore Kaylee Taff chipped in 11 kills and a .526 attack percentage.

Sadie Anderson led Jacksonville State’s offense with 10 kills. The Gamecocks were limited to 34 kills and a .267 attack percentage for the match.

Slay’s match-best 14 kills continued her recent hot run that extended to four matches. She is has 64 kills (4.27 kills per set) and a .355 attack percentage over her last four matches (15 sets).

Gable Gears Up
Sophomore Cecily Gable bounced back from her sub-par outing at SIUE in the biggest fashion, posting 13 kills and a career-best .632 attack percentage. Four of her kills came in the match’s final 13 points and two of those helped tie the third set, including a kill for 23-23 in the third.

No Help Needed
APSU Volleyball - Sammie Ebright
All 56 Austin Peay kills were recorded by its six starters. Besides Slay and Gable’s outings, sophomore Kaylee Taff (11 kills), senior Sammie Ebright (9), sophomores Christina White (8) and Kristen Stucker (1) each chipped in on the offense.

Senior Doing What’s Needed
Ebright nearly had her season’s first double-double, tacking on a team-leading 12 digs to her nine-kill outing. She also chipped in two service aces and a block for a busy night.

Keep On Pushing
The win was the Govs 10th in its last 11 matches dating back to September 16th. Austin Peay has seven three-set wins during that stretch and has won 30 of the 37 sets played.

Austin Peay continues its brief two-match homestand when it hosts Tennessee Tech in a 2:00pm, Saturday contest at the Dunn Center.
