Wesley Gray leads APSU Cross Country to fourth place finish at JennaStrong Invitational

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsWilmington, OH – Sophomore Wesley Gray finished 16th in the men’s 8K event, helping Austin Peay State University men’s cross country team post a 4th place finish at the JennaStrong Invitational, Friday.

Gray’s time of 25:38.1 is the second-lowest 8K time by an APSU runner this season, and the season-best mark for Gray by one second. Freshman Hezron Kiptoo placed 39th in the event with a time of 26:11.6, continuing his consistency as one of APSU’s frontrunners.

Freshmen Tyler Smith (26:22.3) and Nash Young (26:24.8) finished 52nd and 54th, respectively, while senior Daniel Hamm was close behind in 56th (26:25.1).

Rounding out the Austin Peay finishers in a stacked field was Kyle Harmon in 128th (27:26.1), Andrew Abel in 158th (27:52.5), Nick Piskor in 196th (28:14.3) and Martin Rejman 226th (28:57.3).

A total of 38 schools participated in the men’s race, with Shawnee State claiming the top spot.

In the women’s 5K race, the Govs placed 19th out of 38 teams. Leading the way was junior Becca Wheeler, recording her second-best time of the season at 19:49.9. Wheeler has led Austin Peay in four of the team’s six events.

Sarah Carpenter had her best time of 2016 at 20:09.6, good for 86th place. Meanwhile, Unjala Lester finished 103rd (20:23.4), Sarah-Emily Woodward was 119th (20:47.0), Hanna Wise came in 255th (22:53.0) and Sarah Eskildson was 275th (23:22.3).

Austin Peay will take a week off to regroup before the Ohio Valley Conference Championships, which take place October 29th in Nashville Tennessee.
